Whenever I think of Prince, I’m reminded of the off and on forays of my singing with a band.
While kickin’ around ideas having to do with what the bands’ direction, my question was:”why limit ourselves to any one particular style of music?”.
In answer to my query I was told something to the effect of: “you can’t do that because record companies don’t market groups that way.”
I more or less accepted this because I was less “experienced” than the other members, and being part of the band was fun at the time.

In some small way I must’ve had a kernel of a similar mindset which Prince not only had and mastered, but brought to fruition.

Although I tend to identify more with his jazzy/funky side and ballads, he has been able to also encompass rock, blues, pop and other genres like no other artist over the last 30 years.

This is not to say he hasn’t had missteps and made some poor decisions;public/private,both musically and contractually.

He has still managed to maintain his vision and the ability to still be a force in music to be reckoned with.

To this day, he is one of very few artists I will pay $100.00 to see live.

“New Power Soul” is probably one of his/their most under-appreciated albums.
Although credited as the New Power Generation’s only album, it is definitely Prince.

Sometimes, depending on the artist, lack of public support means poor product. Other times, reluctance can be the result of the product being other than expected. In the instance of “New Power Soul”, the latter seems to have been the case, because the album is excellent.

There seems to be 3 fan preferences for Prince’s music. Rock fans, funk fans, and the more sophisticated/exposed listener to whom both styles have appeal.

From start to finish, there is something for everyone, but you have to listen.

funk this

Funk This

Chaka is probably the most versatile female vocalist of our time, in terms of natural feel for music and pure dynamic range. Anything she sings, she sings well musically.

One of the many reasons I say this is because most of her songs have some of the most wicked background dubs…by her, and even when singing in her highest registers, she’s never annoying like some artists of similar ability.

Unfortunately, like Jackie Wilson, a lot of the best songwriters don’t write well for her.

Her latest release”Funk This” although not great, is a good album. I’d give it a C+. Since they went back and got Tony Maiden to play, not to mention Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis on production, they should’ve got Stevie to write again as well.

That said, the tune “Will You Love Me” ranks as high as any of the best of her previous work. It’s a shame todays’ musical climate(radio) doesn’t lend itself to airplay of this sort.

Enjoy!

I used to think that I was happy
But I was just lying to myself
Made me believe no one would have me
So I put my poor heart on the shelf

Like a heatwave
Like a sud-den wind
Like a slap to the essence of my being
Boy you came in, like a sud-den wind
You know you blew me away
Away…

(Chorus)
Will you love me
Will you be-the-one
Who is coming, coming to my rescue
Will you care for me
Will you com-fort me
Will you be the one
The one who’s gonna rescue me

I feel like I was born just for you
I am so glad you came in time
Now that your here
I just adore you baby
To lose this love would be a crime

Like a heatwave
Like a sud-den wind
Like a slap to the essence of my being
Boy you came in, like a sud-den wind
You know you blew me away
Away…

(Chorus)
Will you love me
Will you be the one
Who is coming, coming to my rescue
Will you care for me
Will you com-fort me
Will you be the one
The one who’s gonna rescue me

Music Interlude

(Chorus)
Will you love me
Will you be the one
Who is coming, coming to my rescue
Will you care for me
Will you com-fort me
Will you be the one
The one who’s gonna rescue me

Will you love me
Will you love me
Will you love me
Will you love me
Will you love me
Will you love me
Will you love me
Will you love me

(Chorus)
Will you love me
Will you be the one
Who is coming, coming to my rescue
Will you care for me
Will you com-fort me
Will you be the one
The one who’s gonna rescue me
