INTERNET RADIO ON YOUR SMART PHONE

In the interest of simplicity, the easiest method I’ve found for recording internet radio/streaming audio to my smart phone is by using a couple of stand alone sound editing applications.

I use the iMic recording program from Griffin Technologies. It is designed primarily to convert analog recordings(lps and cassettes) to digital format, but can also be used to record streaming audio. This app costs about $35.00, and is for Mac/PC. The hardware connects via USB, and has an input jack for mic/line in, and an output jack for speaker/line out.

The iMic editing program is called Finyl Vinyl. There is a 17 page manual included, and the software is pretty user friendly. Included in the interface is an equalizer with 10 bands which can be turned on/off. Editing is also possible through the Quick Edit screen for adding/removing tracks or silence(if signal is dropped during recording).Tracks can be labeled as well. It records in either WAV or AIFF formats, which, however can’t be played on Blackberry. The file needs to be converted.

FFmpegX is a shareware($15.00) audio/video converter program for macs. I happen to use it to format my music videos on profyousion.com, but it can also be used to format audio files from WAV/AIFF to mp3, and a lot of other uses as well.
It has a pretty straight forward interface, and a comprehensive help menu. I was able to convert a 1hr:38 min in about 20 minutes.

Once you’ve completed your file from Finyl Vinyl, you just drag and drop onto FFmpegX as shown below.

Drop your file in the source format window. The target window has a drop down menu, and near the bottom choose: “audio to mp3″, and click “encode”. A pop-up screen appears asking for the “progress app”. Scroll down and select it, and a progress bar will appear. When your conversion is finished, your will hear an audible “ding”. The default location of the file will be in your ~/Music folder, under FV Project #, as a .mp3 file. Just connect your phone and drag that file to your phones’ media folder/sd card and you’ve got internet radio on your phone!
